The 2026 season marks the 15th year of league competition and the beginning of a new chapter as the former Big 12 Fantasy League officially takes the field for the first time as the Great Lakes Football League. With a new identity, new divisions and the newly christened Lakefront Bowl waiting at the end of the road, the GLFL enters its inaugural season carrying more than a decade of history into a new era.
The road to the Lakefront Bowl begins with the Boston Brawlers wearing the crown. Boston captured its first championship in franchise history in 2025, completing a memorable postseason run with a victory over the Tucson Sugar Skulls in the title game. Now the question shifts from whether Boston can reach the top to whether the Brawlers can stay there, with Tucson, Milwaukee, Los Angeles and the rest of the league beginning another chase for the championship.
The 2026 season brought a different approach to roster construction. Rather than beginning the year with a complete league-wide redraft, General Managers were allowed to carry selected players over from their 2025 rosters before filling out the remainder of their teams through an August rookie and free-agent draft.
The result was a unique transitional draft. Selected players remained with their previous clubs while rookies, free agents and other available players entered the draft pool, giving teams an opportunity to address roster needs without rebuilding completely from scratch.
Unlike the experimental auction format used in 2025, the league returned to a traditional draft for the available player pool. With much of each team's core already in place, draft strategy centered less on constructing an entire roster and more on finding immediate contributors, adding depth and identifying players capable of becoming long-term pieces.
When the draft was complete, Miami emerged with the highest grade from GLFL National, earning an A for its work, while Milwaukee, Brooklyn and Cleveland each received an A-. The night also produced plenty of debate over which teams found value, which took the biggest risks and which moves could ultimately shape the 2026 season.

The 2026 regular season will span 14 weeks, beginning on the Wednesday night following Labor Day — a change from a traditional Thursday start for the league’s opening week. Each team will face its division rivals twice and every other team once, with the final week subject to flex scheduling as playoff races and divisional championships take shape.
When the regular season concludes, seven of the league's 12 teams will advance to the postseason. From there, only one will survive the road to the championship and become the first team in league history to hoist the Lakefront Bowl trophy.
For those still nostalgic about the experimental days, the league maintained three individual defensive positions (IDP) in lieu of team defenses — a nod to the innovation introduced back in 2022, though many GMs might barely remember the switch at this point.
Continuing a long-standing tradition, the league will once again utilize flex scheduling for the final week of the regular season, allowing the most consequential playoff and divisional matchups to take center stage as the postseason picture comes into focus.

The 2026 postseason presented by Cousins Subs kicks off on December 16, 2026, culminating in the Lakefront Bowl on January 5, 2027 in Inglewoodß, California. Seven teams will earn the right to compete: divisional winners claimed automatic spots, while the remaining four slots went to the best non-division winners.
